چکیده

Introduction Injection of the dopaminergic neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the striatum or medial forebrain bundle (MFB) is classically used to model Parkinsonism, but is increasingly used in a range of disease models [1]. Standard histological techniques are generally used to study the development and extent of the lesion, but it is not possible to use these techniques in-vivo. MRI offers an opportunity to perform non-invasive longitudinal studies of lesion development. Here we present some early work investigating brain morphology ex vivo by looking at brain symmetry following a unilateral lesion.

The 6-OHDA mouse model of Parkinson's disease - Terminal striatal lesions provide a superior measure of neuronal loss and replacement than median forebrain bundle lesions.

Unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions of the nigrostriatal pathway produce side-biased motor impairments that reflect the motor deficits seen in Parkinson's disease (PD). This toxin-induced model in the rat has been used widely, to evaluate possible therapeutic strategies, but has not been well established in mice. With the advancements in mouse stem cell research we believe the require...

O 11: Diagnosis and Management of Neuromyelitis Optica

Typical NMO is characterized by simultaneous or sequential acute transverse myelitis and optic neuritis. Spinal cord lesions extending over 3 or more vertebral segments and normal brain imaging are the typical MRI findings in NMO. In typical cases with positive NMO antibody the diagnosis is easy but in seronegative and atypical cases with different clinical manifestations and MRI features the d...

The rotational behavior model: asymmetry in the effects of unilateral 6-OHDA lesions of the substantia nigra in rats.

A basic assumption of the 'rotational behavior model' is that amphetamine (AMPH) produces ipsiversive rotational behavior in rats with unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) system. However, we report here that if the normally 'dominant ' striatum is partially depleted of DA the majority of rats turn contraversive when given AMPH, i.e. in the opposite direction ...

Silent subcortical brain infarction

Introduction: The silent brain lesions detected by MRI were fairly common not only in first-ever stroke but also in normal elderly subjects. Some recent studies show the possible role of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in acute first-ever ischemic stroke. Methods: In this descrip...

Is a negative cranial CT-scan adequate to support a diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri

In a patient with features indicating the presence of pseudotumor cerebri, a negative cranial CT-scan is not adequate to rule out less benign pathology and an MRI of brain should be performed. In this study, a 10-year old boy with daily headaches for one month and diplopia for one week was found to have a partial abducens palsy and bilateral papilledema; otherwise, his examination was normal. A...
